Not quite sure how to phrase the topic name, but basically Im just wondering how "funny" or "serious" the game is going to be?

I really dont think this can be decided early enough, as it will influence everything from models and art to music and sound effects. If someone makes a series of half-serious "funny" models for creatures a la Dungeons of Dredmor, they are simply wasted time if we then later decide not to include silly models.

Dont get me wrong, i think we should include some humor here and there, in flavor text, dialogs and maybe even some item/ship names and so on even if we decide to go straight faced space-opera-thingymajiggy, but how big of a role is it going to play?

Im asking purely for selfish reasons of course, as i wish to know how to structure my songs, and which "tone" i want my sound effects to be, be it dark or light.

It's kind of hard for me personally to think of music as either 'light' or 'dark', but I think I understand. The music should be thematic and fit the scene perfectly in order to fully immerse the gamer.

I honestly hope that we don't do the whole Bard's Tale type of humour, where every other line is a cliche or joke, or have to use kazoos or rim-shot aspects to push a joke (I guess that should be rectified in the way of good writing). Yet, at the same time, I do hope that we can have moments of grandeur, or some happy-bonus-round type environment that would be all triumphant horns and cymbals. In fact, I hope there will be a place for all types of thematic scores, from the waterphone to the steel drums, from the 'dark' to the 'light'.

I want ALL THE THINGS!

I see that a music thread has been started, so I will answer the Theme/Mood part of this discussion with the following question:

How many planets are we going to have? That's how many moods I would like to see implemented. In short:

We are really going to have to think about the tone of the game, it's not such an easy question.

 

At the moment, I'm enamored with the idea of having ridiculous Ninja/Robot/Zombie character creation options, and then have the game take itself completely seriously, so NPCs/story would ignore the fact that you're a Cybernetic Clown Gunfighter and emphasize the important consequences of the missions they sent you on.

 

But like I say, this is a subject that needs a lot of thinking and discussing, and honestly, some of it will flow from the gameplay crunch we develop. Good story influences the crunch, and good crunch in turn influences the story in a feedback look.

What if we have the main character breaks the fourth wall like Deadpool? The world around him is usually serious, but he knows he's in a comic book and he's the only one who sees how ridiculous some things are. The NPCs/story would be serious, but the character would know he is a video game character controlled by the player. We can have the character note that the dice rolls aren't going his way, yell at the player to push the H button so he doesn't die, or complain about the designer using too many polygons on his ass.
