I'm working on the iteration of the design document based on this feedback, but I've found a "bug" in the story: It doesn't make sense that the player is getting exclusive rights to a system.  We need rival corporations and such to be present so that we have a consistent source of appropriate enemies to fight.  It doesn't make sense for every planet and moon (and asteroid?) to have dangerous native creatures, and precursor bots shouldn't be omnipresent either (because why weren't the omnipresent anywhere else)?  I suppose it's possible to explain that the Wormhole Nexus is leading to an area of space that is specifically heavy on the Precursor presence, but I'm not sure I like that feel.

If nothing else, giving a whole solar system to one organization is probably overkill.  There may be an "infinite" number of solar systems out there, but if we are opening wormholes more or less at random, it's actually quite hard to find a wormhole that opens to a solar system (as opposed to empty space), so there would be competition to gain access to them.

Instead, I think everything starts to make more sense if there are X number of licenses for each system, so multiple organizations are going to establish a foothold.  This obviously causes a lot of tension, and it doesn't take long for a shooting war to break out between the different groups.  Even if there's not open warfare, there's still competition for control over the far end of the wormhole.  Maybe the wormhole roots itself to the largest, most powerful "anchor", so it's a race to see who can build the biggest starbase and gain control over all the trade in the sector.  Battles in open space may be rare, since everyone is flying freighters and mining ships, not military vessels — also one of the reasons BOARDING attempts are common and blowing each other up is not — but on the ground when you're meters away from claiming a valuable ore vein (or worse, some Precursor relics)?  There are trillions of credits at stake, so you need to be bloodthirsty.

In fact, the "home" part of the galaxy may have descended into war as well, though the area around the Wormhole Nexus might be considered a safe haven by all because it's too important (though assassinations may occur).

I'm just a dude with Fraps and too much spare time.

…so basically a giant death star…:D…I was thinking about there being like…12 races…

and there are 4 governments…(or basically they just band together)…and they went a little like this…:D

Humans human like being, and more human like being…but different…like…(on star wars you got the humans…and then you go on to a human like but just a little different…like funky colors…and then on to alien humans like the twi-leks…Kit fisto…:O…and they make up your good guy team or whatever…

and then you go on to two kind of nuetral peoples…one favors you and the other favors your "enemy"

and your enemy is the most non human things…like the aliens off the movie alien…and they hate humans…they think they are the most stupid organisms in the galaxy…and they treat them as slaves…

and so you could have a sence of good vs evil with races we all make up…

and with that…systems won't always be completely uninhabited by some species…

you could get a mission to explore system potato nd you go there and it ends up you get a face fool of plasma beams tearing you appart and you would have to retreat…(I'm thinking maybe instead of geting sent through with no return…you get an option to "retreat" through the small portal you come through…so you can still have this feature but not die from it…?

It would seem preety cool?(maybe even minor peoples that you can choose to save or destroy…?)

I basically said what you were like ask saying…there are your friend people and your enemy peoples…

so…12 different organisms…

3 good

3 sort of good

3 sort of bad

3 bad (your at war with them)

and maybe instead of a huge generation seed…of like…planets an dsuch…maybe just make it more of a randomly generated things…but with more plotted systems??

maybe the space of the universe is getting smaller where you can live in…because of those nanobots…?

so……maybe this nano bot plague or just the radiation from bombing the plague is making new things evolve…or makeing things like plants an dsuch mutate into beasts?…or even make walks move without reason?

maybe the nano bots plus the radiation are creating super bots…with highly intelligent ai…and they are becomeing a race of their own…and their goal is dto destroy everything???…maybe they are influencing the super weapon…(aka MLF….MY LITTLE FRIEND!!!…:D)

idk…I think the kind of ties things up a little more…?

I don't know what I'm talking about. :o

I didn't mean to have that all in quotes

I started talking new at …I basically said what you were like ask saying…

ohh…and about that competion for rivals…maybe competion from people of your own race or whatever…and maybe they lead to mini wars or whatever…

maybe you should not make things unlimited…at least in a certain degree…

maybe you take like only a chunk of our universe and make a map out of it…so there are like 1000 or so unexplored systems…(like on orion how there are like systems connecte dand what not…but you have to use a wormhole to reach them…(basically the wormhole takes you to systems not attacked by the nanobot plague…)

so you have your home system…and then you branch out to expland your home system with all the other races doing the same…and so you race?…

but later on when you ge tthe right tech you can make portals to other dimensions…where you willl find crazilly different and stronger things(and better stuff, items minerals and other stuff)

so you have a universe plagued with nanobots and war and then you have alternate realitys or whatever you want to call them where you find a bunch of crazy things…I mean…that would make things interesting?

beat the evils get the super weapon ect…continue the story?…:D

maybe make it after tyou get all the main things…some wormhole spits a crazy super strong monster fleet into your home system and you have to fight them off and reclaim it…?

ideas ideas ideas…tsk tsk tsk :)

I don't know what I'm talking about. :o

We may just want to throw out the 'license' idea, interesting as it was. It's new territory, the wild wild west. I'm starting to think that the 'tutorial' is just that you get dumped into a crap system… one with only one (mediocre) planet, a couple moons and a gas giant. The system is still randomized, but it is randomized with much narrower parameters than normal, so that there's a consistent set of steps you have to go through to explore it all and get the needed resources. [Gas giants may be useful - even essential - later on, but right at the beginning you don't have the resources, so it's just a waste of space to you]

The first part of the tutorial is getting what you need to establish your beacon (so you can send information and so they can locate you to send supplies). Part two is exploring your system, but where that's normally a big job, your system sucks enough that it doesn't take too long (and there are no competitors to make it really hard). Part three is; okay, now I KNOW my system sucks, I've got to get to a better one, and that's when you get enough stuff built up to enable interstellar travel, and start to explore nearby systems. I think that in order to keep the feel, rather than an easy-to-use hyperdrive like Star Wars or Star Trek, initially you are limited to expensive one-shot means of jumping to a new system. So in the randomizer, we have *some* parameters on the second system; limiting its difficulty somewhat. And the idea is that you have no choice but to go there first, but once there you can get enough stuff together to make smaller (much cheaper) unmanned interstellar probes, and send them off to scout nearby systems before committing to the expense of getting there. Most systems are guaranteed to have enough stuff to do a warp jump (there may be some 'dud' systems, but never the first one you jump to, and you can determine that via your probes before you go there).

Obviously, this "stuff you need for warp jump/probes" is parallel to the other forms of loot planets might have. Searching for your warpdrive components should be interwoven with your normal exploration, fighting, quest finding/completing and exploitation efforts. If done right, it helps set the pace and give you a concrete objective in each system. As soon as you get the stuff together to leave, you should feel like you've cleared most of the place out, but the choice is yours to either rush for your next warp jump, or explore and loot every inch of every moon before actually using it to leave the system. This appeals to both 'powerleveling' type gamers (for whom achievement means to "progress" as fast as possible) and the type of people who explore every inch for secrets in an FPS or grind levels in Final Fantasy games until each boss is trivial by the time they actually fight it.

So maybe early on your just go from system to system, taking with you what you can. Maybe there's an Act 2 upgrade where you get the ability to build shorter range fixed-location transport systems, probably involving the use of a gas giant's gravitational field (like a mini version of the one Farpoint Station used to send you out here in the first place). This lets you spend effort to build a network of systems within which you can travel (or just transmit cargo) repeatedly and inexpensively, which in turn makes it viable to build a new beacon and establish a permanent base in one system from which you can send stuff to and from the big international station. But it still takes a lot of crap to get to a system for the first time. THEN maybe in Act 3, you get enough precursor tech together to build yourself a Real Warp Drive, and suddenly you can explore the rest of the galaxy quickly and easily, looking for the main precursor star systems, and go for the gold.

…………………………………………………noooooooo…I wrote a big long well written post and it didn't go through…time to re-write I guess

O.k. First thing…I wanted to talk about…respawning…if it exists(it better or this game is being to over developed…lol)

 first way of respawning is

you just respawn and you get a message…

DDDUUUDDDEEE!!!…YOU ALMOST BIT THE PLASMA BEAM BUT OL NATALEE SAVED YOU RIGHT IN THE NICK OF TIME, PULLING YOU OUT OF THAT CRAZY PLACE!!!…oh…and boss wanted me to tell you this…YOU BETTER GET BACK TO WORK OR I'LL MAKE YOU CLEAN THIS WHOLE SPACE STATION UP!…WITH A TOOTHBRUSH!…ALL 18,534,643,346 square inches of it!…(or whatever system they have)…

you have to make a new character…

SO basically you are assigned as the new exploration leader and your told how the last guy died…something like

GOOD TO SEE WE STILL HAVE SOME CADETS STILL LYIN AROUND!…CONGRADULATIONS SPACE CADET YOUR THE NEW E.L.! I WOULD LIKE TO TELL YOU PERSONALLY SO YOU CAN LEARN FROM THE MITAKES OF OUR PAST E.L. NEVER…NEVER EVER! TAKE ON A RADIOACTIVE WEEBLE-WOBBLE!…THEY WILL ROLL YOU OVER LIKE AN ATOMIC STEAMROLLER!…(or you could be simple…and just say he was slain by some creature…in this system…at this time…on this date…so on and so forth…)

maybe your some kind of super intelligent robot?

or maybe your just a clone?…and your company really doesn't care if you die…your more or less bantha fodder…

another thing is on ship design…

are they going to get any more advanced than boxes?

different classesof ships…fighters scrappers battleships ect.?

there isn't nothign wrong with boxes but the ships wouldn't be very unigue…(I'm sure everyone new this…I'm just bein captain obvious…:D)

ohh…and I would like to say something about home space…

I think you should start at home base…your the first E.L. You are a Space Cadet First Class…best of the space cadets…at least the best of the copmany you work for anyway…

and so basically you go and your walking inot the presidents office main area thing and it is like congradualtions and then boom character creation…

and then you get your first mission to explore system (insert random letters here :D)

And then you go and get your Personal Ship…

and then you design it…do all that good stuff…

and then you get told…well…that should be it…you have some starting equipment in your ship…along with some universal credits, if you would like to stop by the universal exchange…

and so you would then get put on your ship…and then bam…you control everything…(well you get tutorialed on how to do stuff on your ship ect…

and then your off…go do ure missions…

But I would also like to say that maybe…since you know…people are born everyday….maybe your "home space" should grow?…lke get stronger over time…and maybe you get to see space stations pop up… and like "planets" which are just basically space stations except people live on them and such…

Idk…I think that is a decent beginning?…(you would actually need to explain a lot in the begging…but that is just a start…got to start somewhere…:p)

I don't know what I'm talking about. :o
