The programming nerds have their own thread, the graphic design nerds have their own thread, so i figured it was time us sound nerds got a hang-out spot of our own :)
So if you´ve got some ideas, thoughts, or questions about Music/Sound design, here is the place to share them.
Also, if you have some sound effects/songs/foleys that you think would work well in the game, post them here so we can give feedback and discuss them.
Not exactly a solo, but by far the best use of a Theremin ever in my opinion!
Also, Bill Bailey is a boss!
But OT, so far ive been playing around with electronic/ambient and orchestral elements, and have been getting some really interesting results so far :)
Thats one thing we really need to decide; if we are going to have voice-acting at all! Yeah, its cool and all, but there are so many pit-traps that come with adding such a feature. Firstly, we need good voice actors, which many think they are, but without a real talent or proper training is much harder than people think. (Not saying you´re not good BHGOzzy :) )
Secondly, we have quality. Now, considering much of our voice-acting is (if we implement it) going to be ship – to – ship, low quality microphones can work if i optimize the audio. However, anything not going through a coms-unit or a radio in game will have to be recorded on a good microphone. I have several studio-mics, but it just isn´t feasible for people from all over the world flying in to my studio just to record some voice-acting.
Thirdly, the sheer amount of dialogue that would have to be recorded is staggering, considering our type of game. Our world is randomly generated, yet we intend to have a story; meaning we need voice-acting that will make sense in any situation.
If our player is robotic, it makes no sense for the roaming bandit to say "I´ll make you drown in your own blood", seeing as the player has no blood.

Deciding on whether or not to have voice acting is definitely a decision to make, but not really a crucial one at the moment. I mean, we don't have a story let alone any script. Focus should be put on game mechanics for now. If it must simply be about sound, then I would suggest a topic more oriented for sound effects and music… both are still meh topics at the moment. Game mechanics first.
Make it fun, then make it pretty. Standard game creation law.
Oh, and concept art is always a way to go if you're having a brain cramp on mechanics. Concept art with a short bio and possible creature skills? It would give modelers something to envision as they craft their models.
EDIT: If you are good at creating music… that shit is welcome imo. Though it wouldn't add anything to the 'game' at the moment, it sure as hell would be nice to hear. Besides crafting good complete works of music takes a while in my experience.
Seeing as how a big part of the community can only be part of the superficial part of the discussion about the core mechanics, and can´t really bring a lot to the table when it comes to programming, it sort of puts a bad taste in my mouth when a discussion about something that eventually will come up is just casually dismissed, even if we are at such an early stage.
Given the size of the "dev team" on this project, and the fact that there are probably dozens of people just sitting on their hands with nothing to do, having these discussions is what will keep people interested until something they can actually do comes up.
I agree, the issue of voice-acting will not be relevant for ages. That doesn´t mean however, that there is no reason to do it at this point. I have noticed a bit of a slump in posts these last days, and was hoping to get maybe a few more people interested in actually posting, by going off on a tangent about something that may not be key to the project at this point, but might interest someone enough to join in on the discussion.
I welcome a discussion about whether or not we want voice acting and how we would use it. My reply was intended to be directed at BHGOzzy's absolute and unqualified assertion that we "need a voice actor". Right now we don't need a voice actor because we have no idea how we would utilize voice, if we even want it at all.
A discussion about voice acting? Awesome. A demo reel with examples of voice stuff we might want to consider? Awesome. Just outright saying that we need a voice actor? Not helpful in any way.
EDIT: I always thought it would be funny to make a game where all the sound effects were spoken. Instead of an explosion sound, you'd have a guy saying "Ka-BOOM!" We could have the old-school Batman-style "Zap", "Pow", "Bang" popups at the same time. Obviously lends itself to a goofy, comic style. Not sure that it's appropriate for this game. One day, though!
I'm just a dude with Fraps and too much spare time.

I've recently been toying with various sound mods on an electric guitar in order to combine a sci-fi sound with a more… Pioneer sound. Call it Space Cowboy if you like :P any thoughts on this idea?
Btw, that concert was fantastic.
Edit: imagine Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive" … In space.

Are you using any plugins? If so, i recommend Guitar Rig 4MFX if you want to get a "space" sound for your guitar, its simply awesome :) And yeah, i like the idea… If we wanna go even further, how 'bout a "electronic western" style music, similar to Bastion, just with a "space-twist" :P. Just throwing ideas out there :)
Anytime I hear/read these words I get goose-bumps because it means something new is coming. Whether or not I'm a part of that something new doesn't matter. What matters is the world is thinking and changing and the future is still interesting. Fuck yeah.
Considering there has been very little activity on the project for a while, i figured i would upload some music-clips i threw together last night, just to get the tiny pebble rolling again. They are not mastered, not sequenced properly, and are very poorly mixed, but i figured i would upload them just to get some feedback on the basic ideas and feeling of the music.
They are more a collection of ideas than actual pieces, so comment if you like/dislike the sound/feel/instrument/scale/tone etc etc, but know that its not intended to be actual songs.
I'm still working on my end of things, but I haven't been able to do a big update in some time. I'm hoping to get a weekend in April to dedicate to it, which should move things forward considerably.
I just remembered that there's a Ludum Dare in April…hm. I mean, I know LD is supposed to be all from scratch AND might not have an ideal theme…but depending on how things go, it might be possible to use the LD development as a way to add content to Syzygy. Maybe do the space mode?

Wow TD, talented and modest. You're my favourite person right now. These samples are incredible.
2nd one was my favorite…3rd my next favorite and I can't say I disliked the 1st one at all…:D
And has anyone heard of this game that goes something by the name of space pioneer?
It is like a rogue like in space where you go around planets and map/take reasources from them…but it is more similar to dungeon crawl in graphics terms…but it didn't seem to be that "fun"…since the planets normall yresulted in you dieing…lol

Aw golly, im almost blushing :O
Thank you very much, always nice to meet a fan +tiphat+
Im in the middle of making a track for a project a friend of mine is working on, and about halfway i noticed that it could easily work in Project Porcupine :)
There are two distinct parts to it, and you will probably find the transition a little jarring, but its there to show how versatile the elements of the song can be.
